Is what you have in your personal library really that important?

Starting a business is an exciting prospect for a lot of, if not most people. It feels good to think that you can make money on your own, without having to answer to a boss, or work from home rather than waking up at 5 a.m. only to be stuck in traffic for hours, or even the freedom to eat lunch at whatever time you feel like it.

Yes. All these things and more are the wonderful notions of an entrepreneur’s life.

But….Is it really that simple? I mean, start a business, people come, they pay for my services and boom….SUCCESS!

*Insert Price is Right Losing Horn here*

Anyone one who has already started on their own entrepreneurial journey would know that it’s not that simple. many have taught, and I have found it to be true, that an entrepreneur’s success is 90% mental equity and 10% sweat equity.

Michael what are you saying?

I’m saying that in order for us as entrepreneurs to really experience success, we must put more focus on our inner game plan rather than our business plan. Have you ever asked yourself the question,

I’ve been working so hard. Why am I not see the results I desire?

The answer is really quite simple and at the risk of sounding insensitive, there is something you don’t know yet. Don’t take it personally. We are all a work in progress. The truth is there is always something we do not yet know and it is the knowledge of that thing that is going to take our lives and businesses to the next level.

So how do we bridge this gap? One way is to expose ourselves to the right information through the written word. One of my mentors Eric Thomas says,

Information changes situations…

Books.

Books are going to change the way you think and the way you perceive your own potential and the that of others. What books do you have in your library?

In this article I am going to give you MJ’s top picks for an entrepreneur’s library starter pack. These are the books, I believe a young entrepreneur, and I’m not talking about age here, would need to get them started in the right direction.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership – Dr. John C. Maxwell

This book is by far the most comprehensive collection of thought on the topic of leadership that I have ever put my hands on. Dr. Maxwell has spent his entire adult life studying leadership and has been able to take the last 40 years of his leadership journey and concisely and expertly put into 21 laws that cover a multitude and in my opinion exhaustive list of leadership issues.

Why read a book on leadership? I’m an entrepreneur not a leader.

It is my belief that effective leadership of self and others is imperative for anyone pursuing an entrepreneurial career. If one cannot lead oneself, then it would be impossible to lead others.

Think and Grow Rich- Napoleon Hill

This particular book has been lauded by many successful entrepreneurs worldwide as the most important piece of literature they have in their library. Hill was the protege of the great industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. His interaction with Carnegie developed a curiosity in him as to why some people become rich and others don’t. He concluded and highlights it in his book that the beginning of riches is a change in thought. Hill set out to interview a number of rich men over an extended period of time and wrote about how they shared similar thought habits that led them to riches through business. This was a difficult read for me but trust me it is more than worth it.

As a Man Thinketh- James Allen

This book is all about mindset. It covers the principles that govern the mind and we can use its power to either make our life or break our life. Truth be told I have never read this book in its entirety, however I have studied particular chapters and they have served me well in my personal development thus far. I understand now that guarding my thoughts is the beginning of success and wealth, because “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”.

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth- T. Harv Eker

This book is written in the simplest terms possible and it is because it is written this way that makes it one of my favourite books. I believe I have read this book no less that ten times and each time I get a new revelation about success, creating the proper mindset for wealth and money management. The author can be a little brash at times, but once you get down to it, he brings solid proven information to the fore. Be sure t look out for a post soon on one of the principles I learnt from this book and now putting into practice.

What to say when You talk to Yourself- Dr. Shad Helmstetter

To many, the information shared in this piece of literature may be considered nothing but “hocus pocus”, however I have found and my notion has been echoed by a number of business successes, that this book contains a great truth. That is that we are the most important person we would ever talk to. While reading and attending seminars does a great deal to shape ones mind, talking to oneself on a consistent bases is what forms our internal programming. This book speaks of conditioning the mind to do what we want it to do so that we as individuals may live a life of positive congruence. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to make a positive change in their lives.

The BIBLE- Inspired by God, written by men

A lot of you may be thinking… Okay Minister Michael what on earth are you talking about? What does the Bible have to do with business and success?

I’ll start by saying this. This is not by any means an attempt to force my beliefs on you so I hope you take my reference to the Bible in the light in which it was meant.

Now that we have that out of the way, I am a Christian, which means the Bible is my go to book for inspiration in every aspect of life. I’ve heard the Bible referred to as Basic Informaion Before Leaving Earth, and truthfully it is. On my entrepreneurial journey I have always been able to draw on practical examples in the Bible to steer me through. In my opinion there is no book that prepares you mentally and spiritually for an entrepreneurial career much like the Bible does.

So there you have it. This is my entrepreneur’s library starter pack. Tell me what are the books that you have in your library?
